“This project is about communication. Or rather about loss of communication. About a strange feeling when I communicate with somebody over Messenger or sending text messages. Or e-mails. Feeling of loneliness. Feeling that instead of being united we are drifting more and more far away from each other. How different our thoughts sound when they are just letters on the screen of our device. How strange it feels to sit behind my computer and text to my wife who is in the same apartment but simply in the other room, sitting behind her computer. Why are we doing this?
Also how strange it feels when the person we are texting to doesn’t reply to us immediately. How frustrating it can be. Even insulting. Why?
It seems like there is an interesting inverse relationship between all this increasing range of opportunities technology is offering to help us to connect with other people and with the rest of the world, and what is happening deep inside of our souls.” Marko Mäetamm.

Marko Mäetamm’s art practice is very autobiographical, focusing on family life and society, exploring the grey area between what is private and public through a variety of media such as photography, sculpture, animations, painting, and text. His work is humorous despite its sometimes dark content, with stories, very personal and intimate at first sight, that are in fact relevant to each of us as they touch on some very basic human instincts. Often what they depict is so close to our experience that we don’t recognise it, or sometimes not so comfortable to talk about.
Marko Mäetamm (1965, Estonia) has studied printmaking at the Estonian Academy of Arts, where in 1993 he obtained Bachelor’s degree and in 1994 – Master’s degree. Since 1992, has been participating at exhibitions, organized 65 solo shows and participated in more than 150 group shows around the world.
Marko Mäetamm has represented Estonia at the 50th and 52nd La Biennale di Venezia (2003, 2007, Venice, Italy). The artists has received various awards –Kristjan Raud annual art award (2000), Baltic Assembly prize (2009) and others. In 2008, Marko Mäetamm was awarded Order of the White Star V Class – the recognition for services rendered to the Estonian state.
